About Us
Data-Tel Communications, Inc. is locally owned & operated by the Ward Family. The business opened in February 1982 and has been an authorized NEC dealer for 35+ years. It has attained Diamond status for maintaining high business standards and sales achievement. Our success over the years can be attributed to having a quality product and providing excellent service to our customers.
Our technicians are certified on the installation of NEC telephone/voicemail systems, with the option of Digital, VoIP, Hosted or Hybrid solutions. We also employ technicians for installing and terminating voice, data and fiber cabling.
We have cultivated a good rapport with local service providers in the area and work with them to troubleshoot line problems, as well as helping our customers place orders with them for changes to their telephone service.
Data-Tel provides complete training on all NEC telephone/voicemail systems. We can customize training sessions to meet the needs of our customers.

Mark Ward II, President
After joining Data-Tel full-time in 2005 as a Certified Technician, Mark transitioned in to his role as President of the company in 2018. His primary focus is on business development through the design of business telephone systems and network infrastructure.
Mark is a lifetime resident of Topeka, where he lives with his wife, Heather, and daughter.
Paige Jones, Vice President
Paige joined both the telecommunications industry and Data-Tel in 2017 and transitioned in to her role as Vice President in 2018. Her primary focus is on back office operations, such as accounting, payroll, purchasing and scheduling. Paige also serves as the Secretary/Treasurer for the company.
Paige is a Topeka native and resides in Basehor with her husband, Philip, and son.
Tom Carlson, CertifiedTechnician &Operations Manager
Tom began working in the telecommunications industry in 1990 and has been with Data-Tel as a Certified Technician since 1996. Tom serves as the Operations Manager and primarily focuses on system installations.
Tom is a lifetime resident of the Topeka community, where he lives with his wife, Kim, and three children.
Mark & Kathy Ward
Founders/Owners
Mark began in the telecommunications industry shortly after the AT&T divestiture in 1979. He began his career at Data-Tel in 1982 as a Sales Manager and eventually became the sole owner of the company. Mark served as President of Data-Tel until 2018. Kathy joined Data-Tel in 1987 as the Office Manager. Over the years, she handled the bulk of the back office operations, such as accounting, payroll, purchasing and scheduling. Kathy also served as Secretary/Treasurer of Data-Tel until 2018.
Mark moved to Topeka in 1968 to attend Washburn University and has been a resident of the community ever since. Kathy is a lifetime resident of the Topeka Community. Mark & Kathy have retired and reside in Tecumseh.
